An organizational meeting was held on October 23, 1974 at the Williams Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church Education Annex with Mrs. Alma Duer Gaither coordinating the effort. This group organized and became the Martin Unit of the North Carolina Retired School Personnel. The officers elected were:
President - Fannie L. Slade
Vice-President - Alonza Jones
Secretary - Joanna D. Cherry
Assistant Secretary - Rebecca Keys
Treasurer - Clara R. Owens
There were 17 charter members. The unit met on the second Wednesday in each month (September through May) at 11:00 AM at the Martin County Housing Development in Williamston, NC.
